Liquidation Price Calculator

Estimate where a leveraged crypto position would be liquidated on an isolated-margin futures exchange. Enter the direction, entry price, leverage and maintenance margin rate to see the liquidation price, how far away it is, and how fast it closes in as leverage rises.

On a $10K CLASSIC 2-Step account this position reaches the daily loss limit after a 0.5% move, well before the 9.5% an exchange would allow before liquidation. A Velotrade evaluation is simulated and has no liquidation price. The hard limits are the daily loss limit and the static maximum drawdown. Velotrade crypto leverage is capped at 10x on BTC in the challenge, 6x on ETH and SOL, 3x on mid caps and 2x on most other coins.

How to use this calculator

01

Describe the position

Choose long or short, then enter the entry price and the isolated margin you would post.

02

Set leverage and maintenance

Pick the leverage. The maintenance margin rate defaults to 0.5%. Replace it with your exchange's rate for the size you trade.

03

Read the liquidation price

You get the liquidation price, the move it takes to get there and a table across leverage levels, plus where a Velotrade drawdown floor would sit.

What these numbers mean

Liquidation price: The mark price at which the exchange closes your position because the margin left no longer covers the maintenance requirement.
Isolated margin: Margin set aside for one position only. If it is liquidated you lose that margin and nothing else in the account.
Maintenance margin rate: The minimum margin, as a share of the position, needed to keep it open. It rises in tiers as positions get larger.
Distance to liquidation: The adverse price move, in percent, between entry and the liquidation price. Roughly 100 ÷ leverage minus the maintenance rate.
Mark price: A fair price built from several spot markets. Exchanges trigger liquidation on it, not on the last trade, to resist short spikes.
Drawdown floor: In a Velotrade evaluation, the static equity level set from the starting balance. Touching it ends the account, and there is no liquidation price.

The isolated-margin liquidation formula, with examples

Long: Entry × (1 − 1 ÷ Leverage + MMR) Short: Entry × (1 + 1 ÷ Leverage − MMR)

This is the standard isolated-margin approximation that exchanges build on. 1 ÷ Leverage is the initial margin as a share of the position, and MMR is the maintenance margin rate. The position is liquidated when losses eat the initial margin down to the maintenance level. Exact exchange formulas vary: they add fees, tiered maintenance amounts and use the mark price rather than the last trade, so check your exchange's own calculator before you rely on a number.

BTC long at 100,000, 10x, 0.5% maintenance

  • Initial margin is 1 ÷ 10 = 10% of the position. Less 0.5% maintenance leaves 9.5% of room.
  • Liquidation price = 100,000 × (1 − 0.10 + 0.005) = 90,500.
  • A 9.5% fall in the mark price closes the position and the margin is lost.

BTC short at 100,000, 20x, 0.5% maintenance

  • Initial margin is 1 ÷ 20 = 5%. Less 0.5% maintenance leaves 4.5% of room.
  • Liquidation price = 100,000 × (1 + 0.05 − 0.005) = 104,500.
  • Doubling leverage from 10x to 20x cut the room by more than half.

The same $10,000 at 10x in a Velotrade evaluation

  • On a $10,000 CLASSIC 2-Step account the static maximum drawdown is 10%, a fixed floor of $9,000, and the daily loss limit is 5%, or $500.
  • A 1 BTC long at 100,000 is 10x the account. The $500 daily limit is hit at 99,500 and the $1,000 floor at 99,000.
  • An exchange would liquidate this position at about 90,500. In the evaluation the 0.5% daily limit and the 1% drawdown floor come first.

Liquidation is explained step by step in what is liquidation in trading, and the choice between margin modes in cross vs isolated margin. Exchanges trigger liquidation on the mark price, and the contracts themselves are covered in perpetual futures. On Velotrade the limits that matter are the daily loss limit and the static drawdown, which the drawdown calculator maps out for every plan.
